The People’s Association has decided to top last year’s Chingay parade by honouring the legacy of Singapore’s founding Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew in this year’s parade. 2016’s theme, Lights of Legacy, Brighter Singapore focuses on the passing of the legacy to the younger generation of Singaporeans.

This refers to the legacy of Singapore’s founding Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew and other founding fathers. It is passed on to the younger generation so that the nation can move forward together towards a ‘Brighter Singapore’ in the future.

Chanel Chan, the co-chairperson of the Chingay 2016 Parade Management Team feels the same way. “This year’s theme focuses a lot on passing on the legacy to the next generation. While we are part of this event, we get to see the legacy being passed on to our generation,” said the 22-year-old.

The Chingay 2016 Parade Management Team has a wide variety of volunteers in terms of age, with the youngest volunteer being 13 years old and the oldest being 69 years old. Chanel also feels that Chingay 2016’s theme has helped in bringing all the volunteers together as one in spite of their differences in age, stating that: “This year’s Chingay parade focuses more on unifying the older and younger generation.”

Chanel is not the only one who feels this way. Lin Jia Rui, 17, a volunteer for Chingay 2016, stated that: “The best part is the people. The connections we made with the people here made our experience much more colourful and fun.”

Witness the legacy being passed on in person on 19-20 February at the  F1 Pit Building at 8 p.m.
